Obalon Gastric Balloon: What to Expect

About Obalon Gastric Balloon

Preparing for Your Procedure

The Obalon gastric balloon is placed into the stomach by swallowing a capsule that contains the deflated balloon. No sedation is required and total time is only about 10 minutes. Most report resuming daily activities after placement.

Instructions may vary among specialists but the following are some general pre-procedure guidelines on how to prepare for your gastric balloon procedure.

Pre-Procedure Diet

  • Nothing to eat or drink starting 8 hours before your procedure time.
  • That’s it!

Medications

Discuss your medications with your specialists, but typically, you may take necessary medications with a SIP of water prior to the Obalon weight loss procedure. Common necessary medications include those for:

  • Reflux
  • Thyroid
  • Seizures
  • Depression
  • Irregular heart rhythms
  • Blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • COPD

Diabetics

**Very Important** Inform your primary care provider or whoever manages your diabetes that you will be fasting for at least 8 hours prior to the weight loss balloon placement. You may need to decrease your medications or wait until you eat again to take them so that your blood sugar doesn’t drop too low.

Transportation

Since there will be no sedation, you may drive yourself home if you’d like.
